Richie Rees in action for Wales. Richie tore all three hamstrings away from his pelvis completely and had these repaired (a scan shows the hamstrings torn away from the pelvis). He is now back in full action.
When hamstring muscles have been torn away from the pelvis, this is a different injury to the simpler and more common hamstring strain. These are becoming commoner injuries now, particularly in rugby and sports like water skiing. The hamstrings work better if they are attached to the pelvis and early surgical repair is the best way of managing this.
Injuries can be suspected by an uncommonly large amount of bruising associated with a hamstring tear.
