Dr Libby Bohemen has competed in 16 marathons, but this year’s London race will have special significance for the 47-year-old GP from Cardiff. Just a year ago, Libby thought her running days were over.
A gnawing pain in her left buttock forced her to pull out a mile into a half marathon in Oxford, and to abandon plans to take part in last April’s Manchester marathon.
Libby, who lives with her partner Stuart and children Joe, 17, Alice, 15 and Jack, 12, in Cardiff, was bitterly disappointed.
She says: “I had had pain intermittently in my buttocks following amiscarriage in 2012.
“Since May 2013, I’d run every day. It was my way of coping after the miscarriage. The pain was always worst on my left side, but until now it hadn’t stopped me running. I didn’t want to mask the pain so didn’t take painkillers.”
